Netflix Review: You

You was a series I was excited to watch immediately after its episode one airing on Lifetime. Then, all of a sudden, I was in the UK, and there was no way of watching the series legally. I was bummed after seeing what could be a great guilty pleasure. Then, I hear the entire season is on Netflix, and I waste no time binging through the remaining nine episodes. And boy, it was exhilarating.

The series stars Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley who plays Joe, a book store worker who meets a young graduate student, Beck, and instantly falls for her from first sight. Joe starts finding out more about Beck (Elizabeth Lail) , such as a mild social media search and a quick address search in Google maps. Sounds like stuff we’ve all done right? But something isn’t right, as Joe starts stalking her, watching her, breaking into her apartment and a variety of creepy activities in his all black getup and a cap. His infatuation turns into an obsession and the scariest part is that from Beck’s perspective, Joe seems like the perfect gentleman.

The series definitely has a Lifetime feel, don’t get me wrong. The show is not something that is always the most smartly crafted series ever, but it really embraces that guilty pleasure feel that I miss in a series. Every episode is unpredictable as Badgley shows Joe’s erratic behavior perfectly through his eyes and clenched demeanor every time something doesn’t go his way. It’s a social media horror story, as Instagram and Twitter become key mediums for Joe to pull off some of his shenanigans. Additionally, it’s relevant more than ever as dating apps and “sliding into the DMs” are the new ways of meeting people these days.

The show largely benefits from the fact that Joe is the one narrating every creepy thought he has, and it’s twisted that we can actually empathize with him at times, especially when we see him care for his neighbor, Paco.

Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell also stars in the series as Beck’s spoiled Queen Bee friend who is smarter than she appears, as she catches on to Joe’s sketchy behavior quite quickly into the series. John Stamos also makes a surprise appearance as Joe’s therapist late into the series. These guest stars add to the overall drama and both play key roles in how the story unfolds.

The 10 episodes fly by quickly, and the ending left me pretty satisfied as the finale escalated to a point when I started saying “How are they possibly going to wrap this up?” If a series has me asking that by the final episode, that’s a good sign. With the twist at the very end, I’m not sure how strong a second installment of the series will do, but I’ll definitely be tuning in to see how the second chapter will go down.

PLL Fashion from Exes and OMGs

Pretty Little Liars had a ton of fashion, including Aria’s potential wedding dress, so check out the fashion below. Also, here is my weekly review on the episode from last night:https://mytrendingstories.com/article/pretty-little-liars-season-7-episode-8-review-exes-and-omgs/

Club Monaco ‘Rimona Jacket’ – no longer available

I loved how modern this jacket was. The color and sleek zippers worked so well here. And the embellished shirt is so gorgeous. I loved that she paired it so there was just a peek of metal.

Alice + Olivia ‘Sidney Top’ – $330.00

Hanna wore this beautiful top that had an Aztec print on it. I also liked the sheer sleeves. Ashley Benson’s hair has been amazing in this season and her waves look so pretty with this off the shoulder top.

Zara ‘Flowing Shirt with Bib Front Embroidery’ – $49.90

I liked this preppy summery top. This looked like a Spencer top, but I liked that Aria wore these with bright jeans in true Aria fashion. I would wear these with distressed jeans for a more casual look.

Rebecca Minkoff ‘Page Cold Shoulder Sweater’ – $148.00

I really liked how cozy this sweater looked. The cutouts on her sweater matched her ripped jeans, and somehow Troian still makes Spencer have a very preppy vibe.

Rebecca Taylor ‘Sleeveless Dreamweaver V Neck Dress’ – $199.00

Alison wore this girly dress with a simply flowing blazer. I like this blue color on Alison.

Sanctuary ‘Lace Up Blouse’ – $79.00

Emily always wears these criss cross shirts, and I like how flowy and laidback this one feels.

Sherri Hill ‘Spring 2016 Gown’ – not available online

Okay, so Aria hasn’t worn it yet, but it was such a pretty simple dress, and I could see Aria wearing her short hair in an updo or even a headband.

PLL Fashion 7×07

There was a won of fashion from the last PLL episode, so here are my thoughts on the fashion. Also, you can check out my review right here: https://mytrendingstories.com/article/pretty-little-liars-season-7-episode-7-review-original-gangsters/

Forever 21 ‘Contemporary Open-Shoulder Top’ – $14.90

I loved this off the shoulder top for Emily. It’s super effortless and I love the choker and loose waves giving an easygoing summer vibe. And this top is super affordable too.

Topshop ‘Embroidered Jacquard Jacket’ – $59.99

This Topshop jacket is super pretty for Aria. I love how architectural this jacket is with its boxy structure.

H&M ‘Merino Wool Sweater’ – no longer available

Yvonne wore a super low key sweater, and I love how casual and cute it is. The sheer front has such a delicate scenery pattern, which I like a lot.

Topshop ‘Striped Hybrid Jumper’ – $80.00

This one piece jumper is very Spencer. It’s classic, simple and Troian always rocks these types of preppy looks.

Zara ‘Patchwork Leather Mini Skirt’ – $69.90

Aria is known for her main staple, which are leather jackets, but she opts for an interesting Zara skirt. I love the patchwork with the different muted colors.

Topshop ‘Gingham Ruffle Shirt’ – $60.00

Hanna surprised me with this textured top. This top has a lot going on with the flowers and the gingham print and the ruffles, but Hanna pairs it with a classic jacket. It made for a fun outfit with a sharp look.

Forever 21 ‘Galaxy Print Athletic Jacket’ – no longer available

So when Emily and Pam were on their run, I noticed how cute this jacket was. It’s sold out, but who knew Forever 21 had such great affordable athletic wear.

Stella McCartney ‘Jeweled Sateen Top’ – $326.00

This jeweled top is super pretty. I love how random the colors and shapes are because the top is so simple. It really works here. Thanks to PLL Closet on Tumblr for the photos and details on the clothing from the episode.

PLL Fashion & 2016 TCA

Here’s my review on last night’s episode: https://mytrendingstories.com/article/pretty-little-liars-review-another-one-bites-the-dust/

Also, check out the fashion from the TCA’s and the sixth episode of the seventh season.

I thought the entire cast looked amazing at the TCA’s. My favorite was Shay’s because the gold backless dress was just such a showstopper with the simple styling and updo. I also thought Lucy’s was super pretty with her metallic dress, and her summery hair made the look effortless. Ashley also rocked her metallic dress with the interesting rings on the top. Janel and Troian went for more sleek and sophisticated.

Topshop ‘Animal Print Colour Block Jumper’ – $95.00

I am love with this sweater. It embodies Aria’s crazy prints from previous seasons, but it’s worn so simple here. The color combination worked really well too.

Pam & Gela’ Destroyed Holey Stripe Sweater’ – $225.00

Emily looked so pretty in this slouchy sweater. The rips are so edgy and modern.

Zara ‘Slouchy Jeans’ – no longer available

I really liked Hanna’s ripped jean. Her jacket was very sleek, but she made the look more casual and fun with these light washed boyfriend jeans. Also, thanks to PLL Closet on Tumblr for the photos and for the details on the clothing from the show.

Favorite Looks from People’s Choice

Here were my five favorite looks from the People’s Choice Award. Let me know which one was your favorite in the comment section.

Kate Hudson

I love Kate Hudson’s pantsuit! I’m a huge fan of them especially with award season coming up. The white minimalist vibe is working so well here.

Meghan Trainor

I love the fit of this dress of Meghan Trainor. It’s fun and flirty for an event like People’s Choice.

Priyanka Chopra

This Vera Wang Collection dress was amazing. It was one of my favorites because it was a huge risk, but it paid off. It’s hard to mix silver and gold especially with sequins as big as they were. I thought it stood out the most and she let the dress shine with simple styling and silver heels.

Lucy Hale

This was another risk that paid off. In a very Aria look, Lucy Hale wore a boho dress with sheer panels. This dress is gorgeous, but it’s the type of dress that has to be styled perfectly, and she did. I loved the braided updo and dark lipstick.

Shay Mitchell

Shay always wears sleek modern looks, but I loved the twist on a slit with the gold added. I also love her hair slicked back.

Style Icon: Shay Mitchell

I’m a huge Pretty Little Liars fan, and love Shay Mitchell’s girly style. It’s definitely a vast difference from her character Emily. She wears a lot of fun, flirty looks with sleek finishes. The first photo below is definitely my favorite! I love the loose braid with this lace look. The ten looks below are some of my favorite looks from her.
