Project Runway Power Rankings

After the last episode of Project Runway, I think it’s safe to say it’s anyone’s game. I really like seeing the designers have a comeback, and Nathalia did that this week. Here are my power rankings after last night’s episode.

  1. Nathalia– Nathalia had such a great comeback. The only thing that would’ve made it better was if she won the challenge. Her coat and pants were so impressive and I thought her styling with the slicked back hair screamed street style. She should’ve won hands down.Nathalia JMag’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  2. Lawrence– I loved Lawrence’s jacket. Everything she does is so tailored and well thought out. The color was bold, and I definitely think she stepped away from the all black that she’s been doing. The drop crotch pants were the only piece that didn’t work.Laurence Basse’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  3. Jenni– Jenni pulled out a really pretty two piece that I can see tons of girls wanting. It’s wearable, and I can see why so many people wanting it. I’m surprised it was just safe. Actually, the next few looks below Jenni were also equally surprising to see safe.Jenni Riccetti’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  4. Roberi– Roberi had three pieces that worked so well together. I loved the draping with it too. His style is romantic and I thought he did a great job of translating that to street wear.Roberi Parra’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  5. Rik– Rik also had a very strong piece that I liked a lot. It was definitely a nice play on textures. The ripped textures and braided hair really worked here, and the fit was awesome too.Rik Villa’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  6. Dexter– OK, so here’s why I’m confused. How did Dexter end up on the top if so many of the judges hated it? I mean, I thought it wasn’t as good as Roberi’s or Jenni’s, but then the judges don’t love it? I’m confused. I did like the color, but it just didn’t seem like a top three look for me.Dexter Simmons' Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  7. Mah-Jing- Mah-Jing’s dress was just okay for me. I didn’t love it, but it was also a pretty safe look. I didn’t like the jacket paired with the dress. They were both nice pieces, but not together. Mah-Jing Wong’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  8. Erin– Erin brought another yellow piece. I understood what she was trying to go for, but the execution was off. Putting playful embellishments has to be done right. In the first few challenges, she nailed it with fashion forward designs. She’s slipping a little, so hopefully she comes back to the top.Erin Richardson’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  9. Brik- Oh Brik. I’m going to miss him. He just has such a fun personality, and I want to be friends with him. Anyway, I didn’t think his outfit was that bad. The fabric choices were not good at all, but I liked the idea. Brik Allen’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final Look
  10. Cornelius– Cornelius was by far the worst. The jeans looked like jeggings and the top was so poorly made, it actually made me uncomfortable for the model. But he’s proven his designs to be somewhat strong in the past, so he was saved since Brik has been in the bottom twice. Cornelius Ortiz’s Season 15, Episode 7 Final LookStay tuned for next week’s recap.

Project Runway Power Rankings

So I’ve been MIA with my Project Runway recaps because of my busy schedule. I did, however, finally catch up, so I’m going to do a little power rankings post.

By the way, this recap is based off of both design and personality, so some designers might be ranked a little higher purely because they’re entertaining. I also included my favorite look from each designer.

  1. Laurence– Laurence is such a badass on the show. After the first episode, I was a little disapointed, but I love her sleek, edgy aesthetic. Her looks are always chic and expensive looking, and honestly, I just love her personality too. Her leather jacket and dress from the last challenge have been my favorites so far.House of Bouton: Laurence Basse & Tasha Henderson
  2. Rik– Rik is also someone whose personality I really like. He just seems so humble about all the success he’s gotten so far. His designs are really sleek as well, and his swimsuit was one of my favorite pieces from this season so far.Rik Villa's Project Runway Season 15, Episode 4 Final Look
  3. Erin- Erin is clearly a force to be reckon with. Her aesthetic is really quirky and her emebellishments are super unique. I really liked the black light challenge because she used this concept of turning something pretty into something sexy.Erin Richardson's Project Runway Season 15, Episode 3 Final Look
  4. Jenni– Jenni is another person whose style is really refreshing and modern. Her dress from the last challenge was stunning and the color and embellishment made it look super expensive.Jenni Riccetti’s Season 15, Episode 6 Final Look
  5. Dexter– Sure Dexter got a little carried away with Erin, but I didn’t think his fringe dress was that bad. I really started liking Dexter after the team challenge. He was authoritative but still kept his fun personality alive. He’s definitely someone I can see going far.House of Bouton: Dexter Simmons
  6. Roberi– Roberi’s swimsuit was awesome in the fourth episode. It was such a playful print. Personally,  I like how whimsical and imaginative his designs are. Roberi Parra's Project Runway Season 15, Episode 4 Final Look
  7. Mah-Jing– Mah-Jing is so high because I love his personality. His vest was the one piece I liked of the collection, and I thought his tears over Tasha was so sweet.Team Unity: Mah-Jing Wong
  8. Brik- Brik should technically be at the bottom based on his first few designs, but I like Brik’s personality and energy on the show. He has a lot of funny sound bites, and it’d be cool if he made a comeback. Brik Allen’s Season 15, Episode 6 Final Look
  9. Cornelius- Cornelius is such a character. He’s so snarky, but I love the drama he brings. His designs aren’t my favorite, but the emoji dress he made was so amazing. He should’ve won that challenge.Cornelius Ortiz's Project Runway Season 15, Episode 3 Final Look
  10. Nathalia- Nathalia is on the bottom because she just isn’t that memorable. I love this look below. It was definitely a standout. The fact that she’s on my bottom shows how talented the designers are this year.Nathalia JMag's Project Runway Season 15, Episode 3 Final Look

Project Runway Premiere Review

I’m so pumped that Project Runway is back! It’s been gone for a while, and I’ve missed doing reviews. Here are my thoughts after the first episode. I’ve ranked them based on who I felt should be on the top first.

erin

Let’s start with Erin, who was the winner of the challenge. How cool and calm was Erin, right? Everyone including Tim was freaking out on her behalf, and she knew what she was doing the whole time. The color and textures are so fun, but she manages to make it sleek. I 100% agree with the judges that she deserved to win.

jenni

I really thought Jenni was going to be in the top. I love the styling of the braids and slides. The fur coat and painted two piece was so playful, and I thought this was something girls would want to wear.

tasha

Tasha has a very cool street style, and I loved the metallic pants she made. It was different from anything we’ve seen in a while, and I liked the simple top with the strappy back. The little purse was also adorable.alex

This was a little safe, but I thought this was one of the most well-executed and sleek of the looks. I like the different layers and textures going on here. dexter

I liked the styling here a lot. The concept is amazing, but I didn’t love the top portion of the dress. It was an unconventional challenge, and this was a runway piece so I’ll give it a pass. Plus, the long hair and earrings give off a boho chic vibe.

cornelius

People said this belonged in the bottom? This was so pretty and it was made with plates! It definitely was one of my favorite pieces. I don’t care how literal it may be. It was executed perfectly.

rik.jpg

I loved the minimalism here. It’s sleek, well-designed and the back is so beautiful. This is a cocktail dress I would totally wear.

mah-jing

This was a safer look. It’s good enough because it’s made with a mashup of materials and it works.

nathalia

The more I actually look at Nathalia’s look, the more I actually like it. The silver material is gorgeous and the fur sleeves and sleek ponytail make it a solid look.

kimber

This was an okay dress, but it had the effect Kimber was going for. It’s a cute little New Year’s Eve dress, but it’s a little too plain and boxy for my taste.

sarah

Sarah needs to chill because this little two piece she put out actually worked out pretty well. laurence

I had such high expectations for Lawrence, and I was disappointed that she didn’t make anything that great. At least she admitted it though.roberi

This really shouldn’t have been on the bottom. It was a safe piece as well, but there were plenty of other safes ones that has way less creativity than this one. I’m on Heidi’s side.rick

If Brik just made the top into a black crop top and did a little top knot instead, this look would be fine. But the romantic top and hairdo doesn’t work with these pants. I like Brik, so I hope he pulls it together.

ken

Ian deserved to go home. The fringe is pretty, but when I saw the Polaroids, I was instantly thinking it would be amazing and creative. This was so disappointing and it did deserve to go. But good for Ian for standing by it.

linda

This was my least favorite look. It was so plain and basic. I personally thought this one had the least amount of design, and it was paired with those flats that didn’t really match.

My Thoughts on Project Runway

So I took a break from Project Runway reviews because I’ve been busy with classes. We’re down to the final four, and I wanted to do a quick summary on the eliminated contestants and final four.

Edmond: Edmond is my favorite to win. Personally, I like his aesthetic the best. It’s clean, fresh and innovative. I loved his red bombshell dress. Out of all the designers, he is the most strategic with the concepts of the  challenges.

Kelly: Kelly from the deli has had quite the transformation. I think she’s another force to be reckon with. She finally gets how to edit down her crazy ideas, and her taste level has elevated. Her silver tin dress was perfection, and her brick dress was surprisingly chic and playful. I think she could have a great collection as long as it’s cohesive.

Ashley: Ashley’s storyline has focused a lot about her insecurities. I think she has the potential for a fun, flirty collection, as long as she’s confident. I also think she does romantic styles very well too. Her standout moment for me was the photograph fit and flare dress.

Candice: For some reason, I’m not as invested in Candice’s pieces as the other three designers. Her red dress was stunning, but I agreed with Nina. She could’ve done more. I am excited to see her black edgy style in a collection.

Merline: I love Merline’s personality. She’s so positive, and I think her work is underrated. I agree that her last dress was lackluster compared to the others though.

Swapnil: For some reason, Swapnil got the weirdest “I don’t care,” edit. I think he wanted to win, but he was distracted. Looking back, his earlier pieces were much better than what he ended with.

As far as the other designers, I knew they were goners. Laurie, Joseph, and Lindsey were not surprises. Blake was kind of surprising because he was starting to grow on me during his last few episodes.

Other than that, the final four will all probably go to fashion week because Tim will use his save on whoever is kicked off. I can’t remember the last time there was a final three anyway. I’m pretty happy with what the designers left, so I’m looking forward to the last few episodes.

Project Runway Review: Episode 4

On Thursday’s Project Runway, designers were asked to make a twist on a classic New York look. I thought there were a lot of  great looks, and I my top 3 is slightly different.

Merline 3

Merline– Merline did the best in my opinion. Blake’s was innovative, but Merline’s was innovative and well thought out. The materials looked luxurious, and I can see this walking the streets of New York City.

Blake 3

Blake– I could see a lot of people not getting this look, but I liked it. It was new and different, and Blake has  a very young, fresh aesthetic. The play on color is also an interesting combination. However, the construction was not good, and the fit wasn’t perfect. That superhero blue color has also proven to be well-received on the show. ( Sean’s fringe dress for Heidi, Char’s 1 hour dress)

Ashley 3

Ashley– She should have been in the top 3. This looked like something Blair Waldorf would wear, and I loved it. I thought this was polished, well-constructed, and tasteful.

Swapnil 3Swpanil– I love Swapnil’s crazy style. I wasn’t as high on it as the judges just because I wasn’t a fan of the sheer material, but I thought this was another strong look. The back is the best part of the look, and it was a clever twist on ruffles.

Candice 3

Candice– This was a great dress. It was flawless in construction, and it made a powerful statement. I didn’t like the jacket, but the dress was strong enough to make the top 3.

Edmond 3

Edmond– I thought we were getting a zippered jumpsuit! That would’ve been amazing. Instead, we got a solid jacket and simple skirt. It was good, but not my favorite.

Laurie 3

Laurie– This looked a little forced to me. I like the amount of work in the jacket, but I’ve seen this before. It reminds me of Kini’s looks from last season.

Joseph 2

Joseph– This was a good look, but there wasn’t anything new about this at all. They’re designing for Marie Claire, so why make a peplum dress?

Kelly 3

Kelly– The play on the white tee was a good idea, and it had Kelly’s signature. It was a good, safe look. It’s too bad all that detail was put into the shirt because it wasn’t seen on the runway.

Jake 3

Jake– Jake kind of annoys me, especially after last week’s team challenge. His taste is questionable, and I don’t really know what his design aesthetic is. Heidi definitely lit up a little when she saw this. I knew she’d like his look.

Lindsey 3

Lindsey– I loved the jacket, but the crop top and skirt were wrong with the jacket. The jacket would look fresh and new with a short little black dress or a sheer cutout dress. She chose the wrong shoes and styling.

Amanda 3

Amanda– This was not a good look. It looked frumpy and ill fitting, but I liked the concept on the dress. I have hope for Amanda, and hope she makes a comeback like Sean did last season. Also, she reminds me so much of Youtuber, Ingrid Nilsen.

Gabrielle 3

Gabrielle– The coat would’ve been so cute with a short colored shift dress. The dress was so unfinished.

Project Runway Review: Episode 3

Last night’s episode was the group challenge where designers took inspiration from countries and a cruise. And again, I wasn’t on the same page as the judges. Oh, and I miss David, and wish he was still on the show. 😦

blake and kelly greek isles

Blake and Kelly: This was by far my favorite, and I honestly thought this should’ve won. How were they safe? This screams Greece to me with the white and blue tones. I also like how the fabric peeked at the sides, and when the model turned around, the print was more prominent. I think the judges are crazy for putting this as a safe look, when it was the most chic to me.

swapnil and laurie india

Swapnil and Laurie: These two made a great team with Swapnil focusing on the sari, and Laurie making it modern and fresh. The crop top and high-waisted pant look was great on its own, but I also loved the mix of patterns. If Blake and Kelly couldn’t win, I would’ve had Swapnil and Laurie for the win.

Ashley and candice venice

Candice and Ashley: I’m really surprised that this look won. To me, the main problem is that this doesn’t say Venice to me. I like the mix of the floral print and the stripes, but the pants threw me off. They were way too short and I wasn’t crazy about the proportions. It’s a strong look, but I think it needs to be edited a little bit.

jake and lindsey hong kong

Lindsey and Jake: These two made me uncomfortable with how poorly they worked together. On one hand, Lindsey sometimes undermines Jake, especially with Tim’s critique ( I like you Jake, but I would sooner die) . On the other hand, Jake was making Lindsey do everything. They were in the top. He didn’t have to be so passive aggressive on the runway. Anyway, I liked the red dress, but I wasn’t crazy about the green vest.

amanda and gabby

Amanda and Gabrielle: This wasn’t that great, but it wasn’t terrible. The proportions are off, and this doesn’t read South of France to me at all. I did like the lining of the top though.

Joseph and merline st.peterburg

Joseph and Merline: If I were Merline, I would’ve pulled a Jake and said this was all Joe’s look. He completely shut her down from expressing her point of view, which is much more fun and fresh than Joe’s aesthetic. The little bib part was made of a nice fabric, but like I said, it looked like a weird bib. This was too old, and I would’ve liked to see Merline put some of her styling into this. She’s been on the top, while Joe made that really bad paper skirt last week. I’m not sure why he was so cocky in this episode.

hanmiao and edmond caribbean

Edmond and Hanmiao: Wow, this was so bad. I laughed when Gabrielle said it was good, and Hanmiao said “Really?” I can’t believe they used their differences in design aesthetics as an excuse. They could’ve split up the look. She could’ve made a structured crop top, and Edmond could’ve made a proper flowy skirt, and it would’ve worked for the challenge. I felt so bad for Edmond because Hanmiao couldn’t voice any of her opinions, and then she went crazy and sewed the model into the bathing suit.

Project Runway Review: Episode 2

Tonight’s episode of Project Runway was the unconventional challenge where designers used Hallmark cards for their outfits. I loved the winner, but I completely disagree with the losing designer tonight. # bringbackdavid

Here are my thoughts on each designer and I put my favorites on the top and my least favorites in descending order.

edmond

Edmond– As a huge Survivor fan, I appreciated Edmond’s strategy in the episode. He wants everyone to think he has no idea what he’s doing, and he’s clearly a fan of the show. He was the only designer to have inspiration from an actual card by thinking of a special moment like a wedding. Edmond managed to make a sleek, form fitting top that was made beautifully, and a whimsical tiered bodice. I loved it.

swapnil

Swapnil– He surprised us with a fun dress. It’s very wearable, and I loved the amount of detail placed into this dress. I love that he used a simple silhouette and focused on the texture of the dress. My only thing is that I didn’t love the buttons on the top or the boots. But overall, this was a great dress.

david 2David– I honestly can’t believe David went home. He has such a great design aesthetic, and this coat was so fashionable. I want this coat. It’s so shocking and interesting, but still wearable. Sure, he didn’t follow the rules, but there were some much tackier designs. I think he should’ve been in the safe group, and Heidi could’ve just warned him that he shouldn’t have broken the rules similar to Ashley. He should be on All Stars, because this was a huge mistake. Also, why did Tim tell him to start over? His crop top was interesting, and sporty.

candice 2

Candice– I think this was slightly better than Blake’s dress, because it really did look like metal and not cards.

blake 2Blake– The judges said it best. It’s a New Year’s dress. And it did look fabulous.

kellyKelly– This isn’t my personal taste in fashion, but I thought this was a well-constructed look. I don’t really like the hood and the cut of the crop top, but the fringe was a great idea, and the crop top was pieced well.

jakeJake– This was another sparkly dress, and it was fine. It was nothing special, but it was definitely solid. I would just take the straps off. It should be strapless.

hanmiaoHanmiao– This was such a quirky look, and I thought it would be lower on my list, but it was well-made so she’s higher on my rankings. The letter was a fun idea, but it was still stiff and boxy.

laurieLaurie– Laurie’s was also in the middle of the road. I like it, but I still felt underwhelmed by it. I liked the gold though.

gabrielleGabrielle– In the workroom, it looked really cool, and I thought she was only doing red on the shoulder with an ombre effect. Instead, it just fell flat for me, and the back is not good.

ashley 2Ashley– I liked the idea for the design. A poncho is a cute idea. But she broke the rules, and the arms were awkwardly placed.

amanda 2Amanda– I agree with Amanda that this should’ve been safe. The skirt is really bad, and I agreed that the length looks  unfinished, but the top was so cute, and I loved the back too.

JosephJoseph- This should have been in the bottom. Similar to Amanda’s, the skirt is terrible but the top is cute. However, at least Amanda had some sort of design to the top half. This was so boxy and unwearable.

merlineMerline– This was so weird, and poorly made. I hated the gray parts of the skirt. I can’t believe this wasn’t in the bottom too.

lindseyLindsey– I liked the idea of this, but it wasn’t made well, and ended up looking like wallpaper instead of fabric.

Those are my thoughts on the designers! Tune in next week for episode 3.
